The Kroka Village lies nestled in the high country between the watersheds of the Ashuelot and Cold Rivers, on 90 acres of forests, fields, cliffs, and streams adjacent to a large wilderness area. Here we work to bring intention, connection, and a sense of responsibility to the work that we do with all of our students: semester, school, and summer.
Organic Food and Farming: For the past decade we have been developing and growing our organic permaculture farm. We enjoy delicious eggs from our happy hens, berries from our berry-patch, protein rich meat from our cows and chickens, and produce from our expanding gardens. The food we serve is local whenever possible, and its cultivation, harvest, and preparation are a celebrated part of our curriculum for all students.

Energy: We are proud of our wood-fired and solar-powered camp village that was constructed by students and the Kroka community. Our cooking and administrative facilities serve as a great example for visitors and students, and bring us closer and closer to becoming a “carbon-neutral” organization. Through living and working with these systems, students learn that energy sustainability can be possible within the scale of a small interdependent community. Whether you are a parent joining your child’s school group for a weeklong trip to Kroka, a summer student embarking on a wilderness expedition, or a semester student living in our village, everyone plays an integral role in our sustainable energy use.
Bringing People Together: Our life and work at Kroka seeks to expand and deepen the web of our community. Our farm products are sold throughout the local Monadnock Region. We enjoy rich collaborations with Koviashuvik Local Living School and Mahoosuc Guide Service, as well as many private and public schools throughout New England. Palugo Farm in Quito, Ecuador is home to Nahual Expediciones, Kroka’s sister school and Ecuador’s premier mountaineering and wilderness guide service. Nahual’s principal guides, Thomas, Michael, and Mathias Dammer and their partners Marcea MacInnis, Marcela Restrepo, and Nicole Marchan have been a core part of our staff for over a decade. They each bring immense wilderness and technical experience to our community. Students, staff, and visitors from Kroka who visit or study at Palugo enjoy an incredibly unique experience of a sustainable farm community that is a leader in organic dairy and vegetable production for all of Ecuador.
