Wilderness Climbing
INTRODUCTION TO ROCK CLIMBING I
One Week, Ages 11 – 13 • July 4 – 10 Sliding Scale Tuition: $950 - $560
This adventure for beginner climbers will focus on “learning the ropes”—belaying, rope handling, safety and climbing and rappelling techniques. Base camp life at Kroka Village will include cooperative community living, making crafts and working in the garden and on the farm. Days will be spent traveling to several local climbing sites to experience the wonder and magic of the mountains and rocks. In the afternoons we will explore swimming holes or jump off the rocks into the coolness of our local lake. Our days will end joyously with campfire stories and songs.
INTRODUCTION TO ROCK CLIMBING II
One Week, Ages 11 – 13 • August 15 – 21 Sliding Scale Tuition: $950 - $560
This exciting program is designed for students who have completed Introduction to Rock I, or who have acquired previous personal climbing experience. Students will embark on a rock climbing expedition to spectacular cliffs hidden deep in the forest. While at Kroka Village, we will review basic knots and belaying and repelling techniques as we prepare for our journey. Once the group is ready, we will travel to our remote climbing site where we will create our own wilderness base camp. There we will practice sequentially harder climbs and rappels each day. As usual, at Kroka, special emphasis will be placed on cooperative teamwork. This allows each team member to succeed in a supportive family-like environment. On the way back from climbing we will explore cliffs worth jumping into the water from, waterfalls, swimming holes and wild blueberry patches. This program is an important step towards participating in Kroka’s advanced climbing program the following year.
CLIMBERS JOURNEY UP NORTH
Two Weeks. Ages 14 – 18 • July 25 – August 7
Sliding Scale Tuition: $1890 - $1110
Skill level: For students who have completed Introduction to Rock I and/or II, or have previous climbing experience and special permission from the director of the program.
After an amazing journey climbing down south in 2009, we are excited to be heading north again. This program is for those who have a love for wilderness climbing, community living, and craftwork. Students will begin by preparing for their expedition. This will include planning, food and gear preparation and review of climbing safety and technique. Once ready, the group will depart, camping and climbing their way north eventually reaching the White Mountains of New Hampshire. As in all Kroka programs, there is an emphasis on creating a safe and supportive environment for students to live and learn in. Towards the end of the expedition, students will take on leadership roles. This is a perfect program for those seeking to excel in the art of climb-ing, work hard together with others and discover the mysteries of wilderness living. Climbing is not just a sport—it is a way of life in which you connect with nature and with your inner self: “The mountains are the means and the self is the end.”
