    Kroka Trips Through the Seasons

    AUTUMN
The beginning of September greets us with all the luxurious attributes of the summer months – warm water, warm sun, lush vegetation and long days - minus summer vacationers and biting insects. For these reasons, September is the best month of the year for wilderness travel. As the season turns, October brings an amazing pallet of colors and refreshing cooler weather. While thousands of tourists flock to Vermont to enjoy the foliage, fortunately very few make it to the backcountry. At the end of October, days are cooler; mornings bring frost on our packs and paddles; animals are busy preparing for winter, and flocks of geese are flying south overhead. Late October until mid-November is a truly special time to be out, with virtually no human presence or sounds in the forest or on the water. This is the time of year when we take along our group tent and portable wood stove to ensure a warm night’s sleep in a comfortable refuge from the elements…traveling in a way long forgotten by modern people.

    WINTER
In the winter, ice bounds the lakes and a blanket of deep snow covers the forest. This is the time to add our ski tracks to those of moose and snowshoe hare’s. January, February and March are great months for very special ski and snowshoe trips to our traditional winter base camp, hidden away in the forest on a frozen beaver pond. It is also the right time of year for canoe trips in the warm south.

    SPRING
As the snow melts away in April, we are ready to float down fast-moving water in rafts and canoes. There is unparalleled magic in witnessing the Earth’s re-awakening, while traveling through the still bare land, soon to be full of sounds and actions of every kind. As the season matures, we enjoy warmer weather, plentiful water that gets warmer by the day, and many gifts growing from the land. The world around us rejoices in the birth of new life and we partake in the celebration – greatly due at the end of a long school year. Spring programs run from late April through the middle of June.

    SUMMER
From mid-June to mid-August Kroka offers 16 unique summer programs for youth ages 7 - 18. We do, however, leave time in our busy schedule for programs with some of our favorite camp and community groups. To learn more about our summer programs, please visit our Summer Adventure Program pages.
