Eel River Expedition

Offered May through mid-June and mid-September through October

Paddling the RiverWild and scenic and one of Northern California's hidden gems, the lower Eel River winds its way towards the ocean through pristine and peaceful wilderness. Life on expedition is both rhythmic and exciting; it invites us to appreciate routine and adventure, and to realize the strength that lies with community. We will paddle approximately 5-8 miles a day as we travel downstream. The landscape around us will transition from grassy oak woodlands to magical fern-laden coastal redwoods. Along with this shift in landscape will come a shift in the wildlife and weather patterns around us. Learning to maneuver our inflatable canoes through swift moving water, we will begin to understand the power of the river. Off the water we will create beautiful wilderness homes, swim, and cook delicious meals over fire.

Our journey begins in Mendocino County at the Frey Vineyards and Farm, famous for its biodynamic wine. We will do service work with our dear friends who live and work together on the land in a multigenerational community to help them clean up and rebuild from the destructive wildfires this fall. From here we will drive northwest through scenic country to the Eel River.

Day 1

You will arrive at the Frey Vineyards and Farm at 12:00 PM where you will meet your Kroka Instructors. After lunch we will turn our attention to our service project helping to clean up after this fall's destructive wildfires.

Day 2

Up early, we will pack up and drive about 2.5 hours to Alderpoint, CA on the Eel River where we will begin our expedition

Day 3 - 6

Life on the river! Each day will be spent paddling downstream and experiencing what is around every bend. We will practice our paddling strokes, learn to read the river, revel in the beauty of our surroundings, swim, and make beautiful wilderness homes each night.

Day 7

Our journey will come to a close as we arrive at our end point in Rio Dell. Here we will clean and de-issue our gear before gathering in circle to hold a final reflection and say our goodbyes. You will then drive back to your school.
