Kroka offers a Fall Semester Program in 2007
By Lisl Hofer
We are very happy to announce the new Semester Program
for the Fall of 2007. The program will run from September
1 to December 20, 2007. Students will begin by working
on local farms and at Kroka’s garden to harvest
and preserve, in traditional ways, food for themselves,
for the winter semester and for the community. Simultaneously,
students will build a lodge using a combination of Native
American and Northern European traditions.
The academic life will include the study of agriculture,
nutrition, animal science, geometry, architecture, economy,
language arts and Spanish. Students will live in a close
community supporting all the needs of their small village
through the work of their hands. They will also have
daily fitness training and will have opportunities to
learn earth sports of climbing, paddling, and caving.
During the fall foliage, the group will travel for two
weeks in Southern Vermont by foot, bike and canoe.
During the late fall, students will complete their
handwork projects, examples of which include making
an expedition backpack, a raincoat and knitted wool
socks. The final month of the semester will take the
group to our sister program in Ecuador, where they will
live and travel with the indigenous people, focusing
on service work, community development and immersion
in a sustainable culture. Once we are back at Base Camp
in December we will spend time bringing closure to this
amazing experience.
This fall program will be followed by the winter semester,
beginning January 2008. After that, our goal is to run
both semesters every year. Admission is now open !
FROM THE DIRECTORS
It has been another beautiful year at Kroka.
A year of hard work and much learning, a year
of growing up and all of the ups and downs that
go along with growing up. Much important work
has been done and we hope you will enjoy the news
