Summer 2006 Headlines

Cape Cod Ocean Adventure: With the addition of a Monomoy Island Robinsonada, Thomas has added meaning and depth to this popular expedition.

Tour De Food: was born out of Chris Knapp’s imagination. Students will build brown ash pack basket bike panniers and travel by bike from farm to farm working for their food. No extra energy used during this exciting journey!

The Creation of a Lodge: Is a collaboration between Grandfather Ray, Misha and Laurel Iselin (Ecuador 04, Canada 05). Laurel took on the research of native dwellings as her high school senior project and the last phase of it will result in a new program where students will build a lodge – the future home of Kroka apprentices.

Caves, Cliffs and Waterfalls: Mathias has put together his expertise in climbing with his newborn passion for caving

Coastal Journey: With the addition of a second giant canoe, that will be built by semester students this spring, Mathias is planning on sailing the Maine coast with square sails, Viking style!

Expedition Pre Columbus: With Grandfather as the head teacher this program will have new meaning and depth.

Paddlers Journey Up North: Students will add to their wardrobe of homemade paddling gear (we’ve already made ash paddles and kevlar/fiberglass helmets) by making lifejackets. PUN will accept beginning paddlers as well as intermediate and advanced students. This year’s PUN crew will head to the West Branch of the Penobscot and the Kennebec in Maine, culminating our trip with a big-water run of the Kennebec River Gorge.

Introduction to White Water will have Sections A and B, for new and returning students. Returning students will begin learning white water kayaking.

Adventures for Small People and Introduction to Adventure: This trend has started last year and is growing: families are taking a vacation during the day camp programs and are staying at base camp! Parents are resting and participating in Kroka, while their kids are at camp during the day and by night we have a community of families sharing meals and songs!

Andes and The Cloud Forest: In its third year our Ecuador Journey will follow a new exciting route, scouted out by Michael. Last summer we sponsored seven Ecuadorian youth to participate in the program!

Canoe Building
Last summer students built a 14-foot birch bark canoe with the guidance of master builder Michael Kohout (back right)

Financial Aid Update: This year we have added a day of camp for a day of work barter program. Many families are already participating. The workdays are set for June 10, 11

Please remember that we are always there to help you send your child to camp. Between sliding scale, payment plans, scholarships and barter we will always find a way!

There is still room in many programs and we look forward to seeing you this summer!
