BASE CAMP & DAY PROGRAMS
FARM DAY All Grades are welcome to a day in the life of Kroka Village. Brita, the horse; Bo Peep and Miss Muffet, the sheep; our family of chickens; our new heifer, Violet, the dog, Mia, the cat; all the animals and birds of the forest and fields and the plants and trees of the forest and gardens await your arrival. We’ll hike, eat our meals cooked over an open fire, play by the stream, explore the forests. There will be singing, stories and crafts.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (all grades) set in nature’s own classroom with a boundless resource library of rivers, mountains and forests. Our teaching staff includes moose, eagle, bear, gnomes, and other respected teachers. Some of the academic areas that can be incorporated into your trip include: ecology, geology, geography, cartography, meteorology, history, Native American studies, hydrology, creative writing, and nature drawing. Other curriculum support can also be arranged. Kroka Expeditions’ teachers can teach an entire unit or enrich your classroom studies with hands-on experiences.
DAY PROGRAMS ACTIVITIES
ROCK CLIMBING,
All grades, May-October. Climbing is great fun! It is an intimate dance with the rock and students excel at it. The success of a climbing day will bring joy and cooperation into the classroom environment.
INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED ROCK
CLIMBING TRIPS offer new levels of learning and challenge to groups that have completed basic climbing instruction.
SWIFT-WATER CANOEING, Grades 6 and up. Easier trips are available for lower grades.
Mid-April - October . After two miles of flat-water instruction and a “big rapid” test students are rewarded by four to six miles of swiftly moving water with fun and challenging, yet friendly, rapids. A picnic lunch and swimming add to the fullness of an exciting day on the river.
WHITE WATER CANOEING, Grades 7 and up, Mid-April-October. This is the next step in our white water progression, for groups that have gone swift water canoeing with Kroka. This day provides the opportunity to master eddy turns, peel outs and ferries.
WHITE WATER RAFTING, Grades 6 and up, with a scaled-down version of this trip available for grades 2-5, Mid-April through October All aboard! During the first half of this trip students gain an understanding of the power of moving water; raft teams practice boat maneuvers, self-rescue and take turns in the guide’s position. After lunch students continue for the final stretch of the day on their own, putting their new skills to the test and polishing their teamwork and communication, while their instructor follows nearby in a canoe or kayak. Trips are held on class II and III white water.
ADVANCED WHITE WATER RAFTING, Grades 8 and up, Mid-April through October. Groups who have completed a white water rafting trip and at least one of the canoeing trips are given an opportunity to raft challenging class III – IV white water. Here, a high degree of concentration is required and everyone needs to be able to work hard and be prepared to swim through rapids and self-rescue if they fall out of the boat. This is an unforgettably fun opportunity that must be earned through hard work on preparatory trips.
OTHER DAY TRIPS: On request, Kroka Expeditions can organize map and compass orienteering workshops, caving trips, winter trekking trips, and wilderness living skills and wilderness craft workshops. Please contact us for details. |
